New Law Changes Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten Entry-Age In California
Montebello Unified School District is now enrolling children for Transitional Kindergarten. This program is for children who turn five between September 2nd and December 2nd. Transitional Kindergarten is the first year of a two year Kindergarten program which will help children build literacy and math skills and provide a foundation for social and emotional development.

Senate Bill 1831 also known as the Kindergarten Readiness Act will change the date students in California enter Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten.
SB 1381 phases in the new age requirement by moving the cutoff date one month a year for 3 years beginning in the fall of 2012.
Across the state of California, the Kindergarten (Kinder) and Transitional Kindergarten (TK) entry dates will change as follows:
2012-2013: 5 years of age on or before November 1 (Kinder)
5 years of age from September 2 – December 2 (TK)
2013-2014: 5 years of age on or before October 1 (Kinder)
5 years of age from September 2 – December 2 (TK)
2014-2015: 5 years of age on or before September 1 (Kinder)
5 years of age from September 2 – December 2 (TK)
For the 2012-13 school year your child must turn 5 on or before November 1, 2012 to enroll in Kindergarten.
Please remember Immunizations are required for school entry.
- You child will need Polio, DTaP (Diphtheria, Pertussis, Tetanus), Hepatitis B, MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) and Chickenpox (Varicella).
- Your child needs boosters after his or her 4th birthday.
- A TB skin test will no longer be required for the 2012-2013 school year.
