MUSD's Seamless Summer Food Service Program Offers Meals to Students in the Community

Starting June 22nd until July 31st, The Montebello Unified School District will provide free meals through the Seamless Summer Food Service Program for local children who are 1 to 18 years old. The program is designed to continue providing nutritious meals when school is not in session.

"This program is vital in providing assistance to families who may struggle financially," Montebello Unified President Edgar Cisneros said. ”We hope our community’s students who qualify take advantage of this program throughout the summer.”

Childhood food insecurity remains at unacceptable levels across the country and children are mostly acutely at risk in the summer months when they do not have access to school meals.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) operates summer meal programs to address this problem. Through MUSD's participation, the program is helping to ensure that those same children to not go hungry in the summer.

The Seamless Summer Option combines features of the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program and Summer Food Service Program. This option reduces paperwork and administrative burden to make it easier for schools to feed children from low-income areas during the traditional summer vacation periods.

“As educators, it is our goal to ensure our students maintain good health with the aid of proper nutrition,” said Superintendent of Schools Cleve Pell. “Thanks to our Nutrition Services Department and the USDA, this offer is available to our community’s children.”
