MONTEBELLO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS IMPLEMENTED AVID DISTRICTWIDE AS A WAY TO PREPARE STUDENTS TO BE COLLEGE AND CAREER READY.

For over 35 years, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) provides resources and tools for academic rigor.  AVID is a college readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll and persist in four-year college and universities.  With support, virtually all elementary through high school students can be academically successful.  AVID College Readiness System (ACRS) incorporates three distinct components:  AVID Elementary, AVID Secondary (Intermediate and high school), and AVID Higher Education.  Each component address the specific needs of students that accelerate student learning while using researched-based methods of effective instruction.

AVID ELEMENTARY

AVID Elementary is the foundational component of ACRS that provides sequential, progressive student success skills and is embedded throughout the academic day.  In AVID Elementary students’ skills are strengthened using ongoing “Student Success Skills.”  These skills include listening, speaking, writing, self-advocacy, note-taking, critical thinking, study, and organization.  Students learn organizational tools and practice skills around management and goal-setting.

AVID SECONDARY

AVID Secondary (grades 6-12) is an essential component of the AVID College Readiness Systems. AVID’s proven instructional methodologies and best practices in content classes will improve outcomes for all students.  The “AVID Elective” affects the entire campus/district by creating a college-going culture that increases the number of students who enroll and succeeds in higher education.  The “AVID Elective” targets students with a grade point average ranging from 2.0 to 3.5 who have the desire to go to college and the willingness to work hard.  AVID requires students to enroll in rigorous courses that are appropriate for them.  In AVID Secondary, organizational and study skills develop critical thinking skills and students receive academic help from peers and college tutors.

AVID EXCEL

AVID Excel accelerates students’ academic English and puts them on a pathway to high school AVID and college readiness.  AVID Excel provides students with sustained, strategic, academic and language-building support, while helping them form a strong team with a cohort of peers who share the same college aspirations. 

AVID Excel includes a two-week summer course between 6th and 7th grades and between 7th and 8th grades and a year-long elective courses in 7th and 8th grade.  Students develop their academic reading, writing, oral language, self-advocacy and study skills, as well as participate in scholar groups, tutorials, motivational activities, and leadership trait development.  AVID Excel is currently at Suva Intermediate School.

AVID Schoolwide instruction occurs when the entire instructional staff utilizes AVID strategies, best instructional practices, and 21st century tools to ensure college readiness and improves academic performance for all students.

• AVID Systems:

AVID is Schoolwide when systems are in place that supports governance, curriculum/instruction, data collection/analysis, professional learning, and student/parent outreach to ensure college readiness and improved academic performance for all students.

• AVID Leadership:

AVID Schoolwide leadership sets the vision and tone that promote college readiness and high expectations for all students.

• AVID Culture:

AVID Schoolwide is evident when the AVID philosophy progressively shifts beliefs and behaviors resulting in an increase of student meeting college readiness requirements.
