Safety Tips

 
The following are a few safety tips that can be followed when riding on a school bus:
 
Before boarding the bus
 
  • Get to the bus stop at least five minutes prior to the scheduled pick-up time.
  • Line up in a single-file line. Do not push or shove while in line. You may be the one pushed into the path of the approaching bus and serious injury or death may result.
  • Stand 10 feet away from the edge of the curb as a safety precaution.
  • Always face the approaching bus. Do not run to the bus when the bus stops. Allow the driver to open the door and motion for you to enter before boarding the bus.
 
While on the bus
 
  • Follow the instructions of the bus driver, who is in charge at all times.
  • Observe the same conduct as you would in the classroom.
  • Be courteous, do not use profane language.
  • Do not eat or drink on the bus.
  • Keep the bus clean.
  • Do not damage or tamper with the bus or its equipment.
  • Keep your head, hands, feet, and all other body parts inside the bus.
  • Do not fight, push, or shove.
  • No pets are allowed on the bus.
 
Exiting the bus
 
  • Make sure that you take all of your possessions with you, i.e., book bag, backpack, purse, phone, etc.
  • Never cross behind the bus. If you need to cross the street, let the driver know and he or she will cross you in front of the bus.
  • If you drop something under the bus, never go under the bus to retrieve it. The bus driver may not see you crawling under the bus and serious injury or death may result.
  • If possible, use the buddy system when walking home from the bus stop. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop, and never accept rides from strangers. If a stranger attempts to get you into their car, go home immediately and tell your parents. If possible, tell the bus driver or a school official about the incident. Try to remember important details, like the color or make of the car, a physical description of the person, etc.
